Best Lightweight Hanging Style Bike Rack for a 2011 Subaru Outback Wagon

Published 02/23/2018

Question:

I currently have a Saris tray type hitch 2 bike rack for the Outback. It has holders for bikes on the inside and outside of the tray and post, and so protrudes way out behind he car. It was oK when we had just one German Shepherd, but now we have two. #2 rides in the back area of the vehicle. I cannot risk having the Dog @100# jump out and break a leg on that tray. So I think I’m looking for a rack that hangs the bike although it is easier for me pretty old guy with the tray. And the Saris weighs a ton, awkward to handle also. I need something that will tilt down, maybe fold up and be fairly close to that hatchback door. I’m the only user and don’t want to spend a lot. Can probably get a decent $ for the Saris at a used sports store. What fits my bill? The thule hitching post pro # th934xtr? Rola TX-102 2 bike? I like he Rola price, the thule with the sale of the Saris is about all I want to spend. Ive been riding for years but no longer doing triathlons at 76! Sorry the rack is not attached so I can’t give you a picture of the situation. but I will attach a shot of the Saris. Will greatly value guidance and advice.

Although the Thule Hitching Post Pro # TH934XTR and the Rola TX-102 # 59400 that you referenced are both excellent options, I have another solution that I believe fits your situation perfectly.

The Kuat Beta is a great hanging style bike rack that comes fully assembled out of the box and weighs a mere 12.6 lbs. It comes in both a 1-1/4" version, part # B202-114, and a 2" version, part # B202-2, depending on what size hitch receiver is on your 2011 Subaru Outback Wagon. The rack is made of aluminum so it does an excellent job at resisting rust while corrosion and the powder-coated, gun metal gray finish provides some additional protection along with a great look.

It features the ability to tilt (without bikes being loaded) and fold and only sits out from your hitch receiver pin hole 7-1/2" as opposed to the 12" of what looks to be like the Saris Freedom # SA4412B that you have. The built-in anti-wobble knob helps to reduce any rattle inside the hitch receiver and the shorter distance between the arms greatly reduces the need for an adapter bar, like part # UB01, to small kid's bikes, step-through bikes, and dual-suspension bikes.

Locks are not included but can be added with the part # HL1 for 1-1/4" or part # HL2 for 2" as well as a cable lock like part # e98891.

I have attached review videos of the bike racks for you to check out as well.
