Question:

How long is it in its normal state? I just want to see if I can store it under the seats of my truck.

I went out to our warehouse to take a look at the HitchMate TruckStep Extendable Hitch Mounted Step # HE4045 referenced in your question. In its retracted state, the base unit measures right at 2 feet from end to end. I have attached an image with this dimension labeled that you can also check out.

This is a really nice, unique hitch-mounted step that features a support strut that will slide out 12-1/2 inches from the hitch receiver so that you can use it even when the tailgate on your truck is down. I have included a short video demonstration on this product that you can also take a look at.
