Will the Access Tonneau Cover Work with a 5th Wheel Tailgate on a 2006 Dodge Ram

Updated 07/11/2011 | Published 07/08/2011

Question:

I have a 2006 Dodge quad cab which I use to pull my 5th wheel so I have a 5th wheel tailgate on it 6 months out of the year. The other six months I have the standard tailgate on. If I buy a 1-1/2 elevation cover by either Access or Truxedo can the Tonneau cover be rolled out and secured normally even with my 5th wheel tailgate on?? I know that I will have no security with an open tailgate, but it would be nice to cover my 5th wheel hitch to keep the weather off it. Will this work??? Any feedback would be appreciated.

With both the Access, # 834532002450, and the Truxedo, TX848101, tonneau covers the tailgate can be raised and lowered without affecting the covers attachment, so it will work with your fifth-wheel tail gate installed, as long as the fifth-wheel tailgate does not extend above the bedsides at any point.

Both of these covers have rails that clamp to the insides of the truck bed rails, and if your fifth-wheel trailer pinbox gets close to the inside of the bed rails when making tight turns, you will need to make sure that there is clearance so the tonneau cover rails are not damaged. The rails for both of these covers extend 3 inches to the inside of the bed rail on both sides.

You will also need to take into account the height of the fifth wheel in the bed of your truck. I would lay a straight edge, like a 2x4, across that bed rails and make sure that there will be room for installation of the cover with the fifth-wheel hitch in the bed of your truck. each of these cover install at about 1-1/2 inches above the bed, so your fifth-wheel hitch would need to be less than 1-1/2 inches above the bed rails.
