Will a 1-1/2 inch hose to tank connection work without a reducer fitting?

The Valterra Universal Inlet with hatch # A01-2002VP has a barbed connection that is 1-1/4 inches. Because it is gravity fill a 1-1/2 inch hose may work with a hose clamp and the tape that comes with the unit but having a reducer fitting would be ideal to ensure a tight connection.
