Recommendation for Transporting 2 Kayaks on 2016 Ford Explorer

Published 12/08/2017

Question:

Just read that Ford limited roof top carrying capacity to 45 lbs with moon roof. What is it without? There are three attachment points on the raised rails. What is the carrying capacity of this system with two OEM cross bars attached at these points? I need to move two kayaks from Illinois to Florida on top of this vehicle. Thanks,

I took a look at the online owner's manual for your 2016 Ford Explorer. It does state that for vehicles with the moonroof, there is a 45 pound weight capacity. For vehicles without the moonroof, the load capacity is 100 pounds. With OEM or aftermarket crossbars installed, you will need to follow this 45 pound or 100 pound limit, depending on what type of roof your model Explorer has.

If you do not yet have a complete roof rack system, I recommend the Rhino Rack Vortex Aero Roof Rack. This system consists of # RRVA137B-2 for the two 54 inch Vortex Crossbars, # RRRCH4 for the Leg Adapters, and # RRRCP45-BK for the Custom Fit Kit.

Then for a kayak carrier, I recommend looking at the Rhino-Rack J-Style Kayak Carrier # S512. This j-style carrier allows you to safely secure 1 kayak but can be expanded with part # RRS512X to allow you to secure 2 kayaks. It includes 2 tie-down straps and 2 tie-down anchors to secure everything into place. As long as you remain under your roof's weight capacity, this will be a great option. I have attached a short video demonstration on this product that you can also check out.
