Will Universal MightyMounts Fit a Yakima LockJaw Bike Rack and VW Factory Roof Rack

Question:

I have a 2 part question. 1. I think Ive already figured out that I need to buy the Yakima Universal Mighty Mounts in order to get my pair of Lockjaw racks mounted onto my OEM crossbars. Can you please confirm? 2. I need a total of 6 mounts 3 each but the kit comes in a pack of 4. So will I need to buy two kits of 4 or is there a way to purchase them individually?

The Universal MightyMounts # Y03590 will work with your Yakima LockJaw bike rack. The MightyMounts are designed to fit crossbars up to 4 inches wide and up to 1-1/2 inches tall. Bars that are either more than 4 inches wide or more than 1-1/2 inches tall will be too large for the MightyMounts.

MightyMounts only come in a set of 4 so if you need 6 you will need 2 kits and you will have 2 spares should you need them in the future!

So the front two mounts on the Yakima Lockjaw are horizontal. It looks like the Universal MightyMount mounts are vertical. Is it still possible to mount a Lockjaw on the MightyMount? Also, will the Universal MightyMount work on my Thule Aeroblades? Thanks in advance!

The Yakima MightyMounts # Y03590 will indeed work with your LockJaw carrier AND the Thule AeroBlade bars on your vehicle. If you check out the install instructions attached on the MightyMounts product page it actually goes over how they are mounted to this type of bike rack.

@ChrisR I have read some reviews that say the setup is unstable when using MightyMounts to attach Lockjaws to Thule AeroBlade bars.....the bikes sway and the MightyMounts are not strong enough. What is your opinion on this? Would using MightyMounts with the LockJaws on AeroBlades be secure enough or should I go a different route? Thank you!

@ReneeG I haven't personally heard of this, and Yakima recommends the MightyMounts # Y03590 to convert a lot of their carriers to fit aero-style crossbars. We have had people successfully use the MightyMounts on the AeroBlade crossbars so I wonder if they were sure to install everything correctly. The LockJaw is an older rack (discontinued back in 2002) and it was pretty basic which might be contributing to any movement they are seeing.
