Using a Yakima SkyBox 16 on a 2013 Ford Explorer

Published 10/27/2017

Question:

I own a 2013 Ford Explorer with OEM rails and crossbars, and a Yakima Skybox NX 16. Will this box ride on the OEM, or do a need to get aftermarket rails and, if so, what fits?

I have a solution for you, but the Yakima Skybox NX 16, part # Y95AV won't fit the factory crossbars on the 2013 Ford Explorer. The factory bars are too far apart when installed, and a little too wide to use safely with the Skybox NX 16.

You'll want to go aftermarket and pick a rack that is quickly removed when not in use (And secure when it is) so you can remove them and avoid the "Double crossbar" look on the vehicle.

I recommend Inno's FlushBar system, consisting of:

Flush Bar Foot Pack, part # INXS100
48 inch Aero Crossbars, part # INXB123-2

These will install at 28 inches apart, and fit inside the clamps and required spread of the Yakima Skybox NX 16. Additionally, the Inno FlushBar kit includes keys to lock the foot pads in place, adding security to your installation.

You'll want to check the clearance of your hatch prior to the install, and measure from where you plan on installing the center of the front Inno crossbar to the line where your roof meets your hatch. To use your rear hatch without any interference, you need this distance to be at least 52 inches. Otherwise, the hatch will contact the box when you open it.
