Hi guys, I own a 2005 4x4 Chevy Avalanche running 285/70/R17 which the owner manual states no chains should be fitted, however I suspect this was before they invented Class S chains or cable chains. What chains would you recommend for me, given that I own a 4x4 with snowflake tires, but will be heading to ski resorts in Canada that require ALL Vehicles to carry chains at all times and RCMP will turn you around if you don't use them given conditions. Is there any difference between cable chains and Class S chains and what would you recommend for me, given my vehicle and that I'm running tires slightly bigger than stock. Thanks

I took a look at the online owner's manual (which are sometimes updated) of the 2005 Chevy Avalanche, and it stated that the 1500 Series should not use tire chains because there is not enough clearance, though it also states you can use another type of traction device if it is recommended for use on your vehicle and tire size combination. For the 2500 Series the only restriction was that the chains be placed on the rear wheels.

So if you have the 1500 Series Avalanche, there is a set of cables for your 285/70-17 tires that may work, the Titan Chain Cables # TC3029 will require a minimum of 1.46" (37 mm) between the top of the tire tread and the wheel well and at least 0.59" (15 mm) between the tire's sidewall and the vehicle.

Should you have the 2500 Series, I recommend taking a look at the Titan Chain Alloy Snow Tire Chains # TC2327, which also require a minimum of 1.46" (37 mm) between the top of the tire tread and the wheel well and at least 0.59" (15 mm) between the tire's sidewall and the vehicle. These are chains and not cables, but are Class S rated.
