Difference Between Available Trailer Wiring Harnesses for 2004 Pontiac Vibe
Published 08/11/2017 >
Question:
I have a 2004 Pontiac Vibe and Id like to install a trailer wiring harness, I see there are 2 different ones that will work. 1 with a converter that needs to be hooked to the battery and another that doesnt and that is cheaper. Why are there 2 different types and which one would I be better off purchasing?

The powered converter on the Hopkins Plug-In Simple Vehicle Wiring Harness # HM11141425 and the Curt T-Connector # 55057 will require a direct connection to the vehicle battery to power the trailer lights. This will essentially protect the vehicle wiring and electrical system from damage. Because these harnesses use a powered converter, it will have a higher amperage rating when compared to alternatives that have a standard converter.
With this in mind, if you only plan on towing a trailer with the basic rear signal lights, the Tekonsha Wiring Harness # 118458 with a standard converter will work perfectly. With this harness, you will not need to run a wire to the vehicle battery and will only need to plug in the included connectors to the built-in ports behind the trim panels in the cargo area on your vehicle.
I have attached an installation video on the 2006 Pontiac Vibe that you can use for reference.
