Replacing a 13 Pin European Trailer Connector with a US Connector a 2008 Dodge Ram 1500

Published 06/22/2017

Question:

I have an 2008 Dodge Ram 1500 that had the trailer connector converted to a euro Westfalia 13 pin connector. I need to switch it back to the OEM tow package connector. Is there a plug and play that can replace any damage they may have done? I am not sure how far back they went when replacing the wiring.

If your 2008 Dodge Ram 1500 had a factory 7-way trailer connector before the Euro connector was installed then there should be a port under the bumper at the rear of the truck. It looks like the picture I've attached.

If you have that port (and it works) you can just plug # 20135 for a 7-way and 4-way connector.

If you don't have that port on your truck, it's either been removed or the truck didn't come with the factory tow package. All of the functions should be there for the 13-pin so you should be able to hardwire in a 7-way like # HM47210. You'll need to use a circuit tester like # PTW2993 to find the correct functions of each wire.

I've linked an article on trailer wiring that might be helpful to you.
