Recommended Maximum Speed When Using Glacier Snow Tire Chains # PW1930V On 2005 Volkswagen GTI

Question:

I am looking for snow cables for my 2005 VW GTI. I came across these PW1930Vs and I am wondering what is the maximum allowable speed on these cables I did not see it listed in the specs. Can you recommend cables for this vehicle that have a never exceed speed of 50mph or more? Thanks much,

Expert Reply:

The maximum recommended speed for the Glacier V-Trac Snow Tire Cables, part # PW1030, is 30 MPH. With any snow cables or snow chains, you want to stay below the maximum speed rating of the tire cables or chains. We do not have available any snow chains that are able to be used when traveling 50 MPH or faster.

You should not use snow chains on dry or uncovered pavement, only when there is snow or ice on the ground. When mounting snow chains on your vehicle, it is most effective and recommended to mount on the powered drive wheels of your vehicle, in your case, the front wheels.

Part # PW1030, will fit the 2005 Volkswagen GTI models with a 205/55-16 tire size. But, before installing snow cables or chains on your vehicle, you will want to consult your vehicles owners manual or check with your Volkswagen dealership to see if it is recommended to use snow chains on your GTI.

I have linked an FAQ on snow chains that you may find as a good reference. I have also linked a video installation of another model of the Glacier V-Trac Snow Tire Cables on a different vehicle, to give you an idea of what is involved to install the snow tire cables.
