Recommended Trailer Hitch And Wiring For 2008 Jeep Grand Cherokee

Updated 05/10/2017 | Published 05/08/2017

Question:

2008 jeep grand cherokee laredo 4x4 ...It didnt come with a tow hitch so it has a rear bumper that goes straight across....Will the curt class 3 tow hitch that mounts to the bumper beam come down low enough since its a straight bumper??? I dont want to replace the rear bumper just because i want a tow hitch....Im looking for a tow hitch that will come down low enough past the bumper! Hard to explain! Just know that the jeep came out of the factory without a hitch so the bumper doesnt have that relief cut in the center of the bumper, the bumper is solid...straight across no relief!...I need a tow hitch that is compatible with the existing bumper! Thank you!

The trailer hitch I recommend for your 2008 Grand Cherokee is the Curt Trailer Hitch # 13251. This is a Class lll hitch and it has a 2-inch receiver opening.

I have attached a link to an installation video of this hitch on a 2008 Grand Cherokee you can check out. As you can see in the video, the receiver is below the bumper. The bumper on the vehicle in the video does not have a relief as you mentioned.

If you plan on doing some towing you might be interested in etrailer ball mount kit # 989900. It comes with 2 ball mounts; one with a 3/4 inch rise or 2 inch drop and one with a 2-3/4 inch rise or 4 inch drop. It also includes a 1-7/8 inch ball, 2 inch ball, hitch pin with clip, and a storage bag.

If the ball mount kit does not include a ball mount with the right rise or drop to tow the trailer level, check out the link I have included that explains how to measure to choose a ball mount to tow the trailer level.

For trailer wiring I recommend part # 118425 if you do not have the factory tow package. If you have the tow package, the trailer wiring harness I recommend is part # 118381.

When working with electrical connectors I recommend using dielectric grease like part # 11755. This keeps dirt and moisture out of the electrical connections and helps prevent corrosion.
