Question:

Hi there, I was just wondering if you need to install a 12vdc relay with normally open contacts when installing a tekonsha voyager brake controller in a 2011 Vw Touareg? I have found a lot of conflicting information about this online and just would like some clarification. Thanks for your time!

I've linked an article that you might find helpful on installing a brake controller in a Volkswagen Touareg like your 2011.

I confirmed with Tekonsha that you will need to install a 12V, normally open relay. For the install:

Obtain locally, a 12 volt, normally open relay.
Connect the ground terminal (85) of the relay to a ground under the dash.
Connect the trigger terminal (86) of the relay to pin #3 of the brake control connector.
Connect the red wire from the brake control to the load terminal (87) of the relay.
Connect the source voltage terminal (30) to a 12 volt source. This wire should have a 5-amp fuse installed in-line.

If you're VW doesn't have a 7-way trailer connector you'll need to add one, plus the wiring. To do so you'll first need a 4-way connector like # 118668.

Once you have the 4-way installed you can use our # ETBC7 kit. This includes the 7-way as well as the wiring you'll need to install a brake controller like the Tekonsha Voyager # 39510. You'll also need the wiring harness # 20127.
