I have an old worn Howard H-255 winch and am unsure of its rated capacity. I cannot find information on the web. What are the recommended replacement options? The owners think it should be able to lift 1500 lbs

For your application, I recommend the Dutton-Lainson Worm Gear Hand Winch with Hex Drive Handle - 1,500 lbs # DL11011. This winch is worm gear driven for smoother operation and has a hex drive so you can use a drill if you so choose for even easier function.
I recommend using the Hand Winch Cable with Safety Hook 1/4" Diameter x 50' Long - 3,500 lbs # DL24104 with this winch.
