Question:
interested in what thickness of metal will the grommet accommodate for a secure fit? Need to know this dimension to determine the thickness of metal to use as I fabricate the brackets these lights will mount on.

The grommet on the Uni-Lite Clearance and Side Marker Light # MCL11AKB is 7/16 inches in total height,and the inner channel is 1/4 inches. I would make sure that whatever metal you are installing this into is slightly less that 1/4 inches thick.
