We haven't seen very many 3 wire brake controllers. We know that many companies used to have these models, but they are not recommended by any of them any more. Basically they had one of the wires that served a dual purpose
There are some 3 wire brake controllers that essentially use the red wire circuit and black wire circuit on one wire. My guess is this is what you have. With that being said, my contact at Tekonsha did recommend against using the 3 wire controller completely and replacing it. The three wire design is outdated and wasn't the best setup in the first place.
Technically, it can work with the 3 wires, but I can't recommend using it. We have many models to choose from. The Tekonsha Prodigy P3 # 90195 is my favorite because of its LCD screen and the no code deciphering aspect. We also have extremely economical brake controllers like the Curt Venturer # C74VV that will be a basic time delayed model.
I've attached the link to the page of all of our brake controller options for you.
