Hinge Recommendations for a 5 Foot Ramp to Support a 1,000 Pound Load

Updated 11/15/2016 | Published 11/14/2016

Question:

Im planning on adding a 5 ft. extension ramp onto my Toy Hauler doorramp. Im going o be loading a Harley that will weigh over 1,000 lbs with the rider on it. What would be the best continuous hinge for me to purchase?

The piano style hinges such as # SH200 are fairly stout but what I recommend is a combination of a piano hinge and regular ramp door hinges such as # PLR1902. Since you will be putting a considerable amount of weight on the ramp you want everything to be as strong as possible.

The ramp is going to have to be pretty heavy to handle the weight so even though the hinge won't be bearing all the weight of the ramp and the bike it still has to handle the weight of the ramp opening and closing. It is better to have some redundancy in this case than have it fail!

What I would do is use 3 of the regular hinges (1 at each corner and 1 in the center) and trim a 3 inch wide piano hinge to fit in between them. make it solid as a rock!
