Question:

Site says all non trailer loads bike racks etc. must be supported by stabilizing straps. Can you explain what these are and how do I use them? Total weight of my bike carrier and 2 electric bikes is approximately 132lbs. Thanks for your help.

You are correct, you will need the Curt Bike Rack Strap with Cambuckle, item # 18050, to support all non-trailer loads on any Curt Manufacturing 1-1/4 inch trailer hitch. This strap is attached to the vehicle using the rubber coated hook on the end of the strap. This hook is placed in the gap of the trunk lip or rear window of the vehicle, and the other end attaches to the upright bar or farthest out part of a cargo carrier to provide support for the trailer hitch and vehicle frame, when carrying non-trailer loads.

To eliminate the need for this strap, I would recommend upgrading to the Draw-Tite Class III Trailer Hitch, item # 75560. The 2 inch receiver on this hitch will allow for many more accessories to be carried and will not require the use of a stabilizing strap. If you have an existing 1-1/4 inch bike rack that is capable of carrying your 2 electric bikes, a reducer, item # HT02, can be used in conjunction with this hitch.

You will need to consult your vehicle dealer or owner manual to determine if the weight of the bikes and bike rack will be compatible with your vehicle tongue weight capacity.
