Can the shank be used upside down to eliminate the 2 1/2 inch rise, which would allow the tailgate to open on my vehicle?

The manufacturer has specifically told us that the shank should not be used upside down on cargo carrier # 63153. What I recommend is to go with a similar carrier that uses a straight shank such as # CC-100. I have linked a video review of this carrier for you.
