For your 2006 Mitsubishi Outlander, I recommend the Curt Class II Receiver Hitch, # C12293. This hitch receiver has a 3500 lb towing weight and a 300 lb tongue weight which is the highest tongue weight available for your vehicle. The tongue weight is the amount of weight that the trailer coupler puts on the ball of your hitch. Typically this is 10-15% of the total towing weight of the trailer. I've attached an article that outlines how to determine trailer tongue weight. This hitch is a simple bolt on application and all of the hardware is included.
To tow with your hitch, the ball mount I recommend is the Curt Class II Drawbar, # C45503. This has a 3-1/2 inch rise or a 1 inch drop. I've included an article on choosing the correct ball mount for you as well because you want to make sure you have the proper rise or drop to tow your trailer level. You will also want a hitch ball that is either 1-7/8 inches like # C40001 or is 2 inches like # 19258.
Finally, you will want to complete your towing set-up with the correct wiring harness for your vehicle. I recommend the Curt T-Connector Vehicle Wiring Harness with 4-Pole Flat Trailer Connector, # C55565. This wiring harness is a simple plug and play harness that will allow you to connect to your vehicle's wiring behind each of your tail lights by simply plugging in the connectors. There is no splicing required to give you a 4-pole flat trailer connection at the rear of your vehicle.
