The aftermarket trailer brake controller I recommend to replace your OEM Ford unit is the Tekonsha Prodigy P2 # 90885. Along with it you will use the wiring adapter # 3034-P. The Prodigy is a highly-rated and reliable controller that is easy to set up and to operate. Installation in a Ford vehicle is shown in the linked video. Also, a helpful article on controllers is linked for you.
