Question:
Curt Trailer Hitch code C11471 for Hyundai Elantra Touring 2010 Description of hitch says stabilizing straps are required for non-trailer loads e.g. bike rack. What exactly are stabilizing straps - tiedowns for the stuff youre hauling, or straps from the hitch itself to the car body or frame?

Expert Reply:
The strap referred to for the # C11471 trailer hitch, part # 18050, would be used as an extra stabilizer for the bike rack or accessory. In the case of a bike rack, you would attach the strap between the upright bar of the bike rack and the trunk of your 2010 Hyundai Elantra Touring.
This # 18050 strap is recommended to prevent extra sway due to the low tongue weight capacity of the class I hitch, in order to maintain the hitch warranty and also to provide extra support to prevent damage to the vehicle frame, trailer hitch, or hitch accessory.
If you plan on towing a small trailer with your vehicle, you would additionally need wiring and a hitch ball. The # C11471 hitch includes a ball mount and pin and clip.
We offer custom wiring harness # 118473, which would plug in behind your vehicle tail lights. If your trailer uses a 1-7/8 inch hitch ball, you would use a ball like part # 19256, or you would use # 19258 for a 2 inch hitch ball.
I have included some additional information below, if needed.
