Recommended ST175/80R-13 High Speed Trailer Tire & Silver Spoke Wheel for Boat Trailer

Question:

I have a 1991 Glastron 17 foot boat with an I/O engine with a Shorelander trailer that currently has B78 13 ST bias tires with a 1360 lbs at 50 psi max load rating . Would a radial tire be a better choice for longer distant highway driving? Should I also be concerned about the tires high speed rating? What would you suggest ? Thank you.

Expert Reply:

Radial trailer tires offer advantages over bias ply types in certain situations. For primarily highway driving, especially if this will be at speeds over 65-mph, a radial special trailer tire is the way to go.
For off-road use a bias ply tire's stiffer sidewall often provides better load support than a radial.

Your current B78-13 tires have a load rating of 1360-lbs at their 50-psi pressure which equates to a modern metric tire size of ST175/80-13 in Load Range C. The radial special trailer tires we offer in this size can be seen on the linked page. The best option for higher-speed highway travel is the Taskmaster Provider # TTWTRTM1758013C which matches your load capacity but offers a speed rating M, up to 81-mph.

If you prefer a wheel/tire combo item with the Taskmaster M-speed rated tire on a silver wheel with 5-on-4-1/2 bolt pattern then order part # A13RSMQ.

Trailer tires should always be kept fully inflated to their maximum cold psi pressure rating that is noted on the sidewall. It is never appropriate to under- or over-inflate a special trailer tire.
