Updated 07/25/2016 | Published 07/23/2016

Question:

What kind of base plate and tow bar do I need for my Jeep Wrangler? I am looking at the bx7322 but my bump isnt flat. It has rubber bumper pads where the frame and bumper meet.

If you want to go with a Blue Ox tow bar then first you will need Blue Ox base plates for your 2003 Jeep Wrangler. If your Jeep has the factory double tube bumper you can use # BX1120 for fixed arms or # BX1124 which has removable arms. Both of these base plates will also work with Rugged Ridge aftermarket bumpers. If your Jeep has the factory single tube bumper then you can use # BX1124.

All of these base plates are compatible with the Adventurer tow bar # BX7322. For safety cables use # BX88196. But I recommend a higher quality tow bar such as the Alpha, # BX7380. It comes with safety cables and its design makes it easier to hookup and disconnect.

In addition to the base plates, tow bar, and safety cables you will also need a lighting solution and supplement braking. Bulb and socket kit # RM-155 is popular for Jeep owners. It bypasses the vehicle wiring so you won't have to splice into the tail light wires for installation.

You may also need a high/low adapter to keep the tow bar level. I have linked a help article showing how to measure and a link to the high/low adapters we carry.

And finally, most states now require supplemental braking on the vehicle being flat towed. One of the preferred systems for our installers and what I recommend is the SMI Stay-IN-Play DUO proportional system, # SM99251. It will apply the vehicle brakes in proportion to how much the tow vehicle is braking. This is the safest way to stop and it reduces wear and tear on both vehicles.

Be sure to consult your vehicle owners manual for specific information on flat towing the vehicle. I have also included some helpful links to our series of help articles on flat towing for you.
