Recommended ST215/75-14 Special Trailer Tire for 2500-lb Camper Trailer

Updated 07/21/2016 | Published 07/20/2016

Question:

I want to up grade to D rated 14inch trailer tires. Also increasing from the stock 205 to the 215. Is that an issue? The stock trailer tire is a Loadstar 205/75/R14 c load. I want to move up to D load. This tire will be used on a 17foot camper max load of 2500 lbs. There is 1.5 inch of space around the existing tire well. Thanks

The larger ST215/75-14 tire size will be about 1/2-inch larger in overall diameter than your stock 205/75-14 tires which means you will lose about 1/4-inch of wheel well clearance around the tire. The width also is greater (10mm, or 4 tenths of an inch) so this means you'll also lose some clearance laterally between the inner side wall and the trailer frame. As long as the larger tire does not present a clearance issue you'll be fine moving to the wider/larger tire.

By moving to a higher load range tire you can increase your safety margin since a tire will run cooler if it is operated below its maximum capacity. Radial tires also tend to run cooler than bias ply tires and they also provide better flex and grip.

The tire I suggest is the Taskmaster Load Range D radial tire # TTWTRTM2157514D that you referenced. This tire offers a 2200-lb load capacity at its rated 65-psi pressure and it is rated for speed up to 81-mph, an M speed rating. A set of these Taskmaster tires will provide your 2500-lb camper with an excellent safety margin to help ensure longer tire life.

Always inflate trailer tires to the full psi pressure that is noted on the tire sidewall. It is never appropriate to under- or over-inflate a trailer tire.
