You can install a transmission cooler on your 2009 Toyota Highlander, even though the ones recommended are for the larger 3.3L engine. Because you have the 4 cylinder model that does not come up in the fit guide, I spoke with my contact at Derale for some recommendations.
Take a look at the Derale Series 9000 Plate-Fin Transmission Cooler Kit with NPT Inlets - Class IV - Extra Efficient, # D13613. You will just need to make sure the fittings on your Highlander match the fittings included with the kit. On this cooler, the inlets are 1/2 inch NPT and the fittings are 1/2 inch NPT x 3/8 inch hose barb.
You could also use the Derale Series 7000 Tube-Fin Transmission Cooler Kit with Hose Barb Inlets - Class III - Standard, # D13103. The inlets on this cooler are 11/32 inch hose barb type.
