Recommended Brake Controller Wiring For 2006 Toyota Tundra Without Factory Trailer Connector

Updated 04/26/2016 | Published 04/22/2016

Question:

I am buying a P3 controller used from a friend. It only contains the controller but not any wires. I have a 2006 Toyota Tundra. I planned on buying the Toyota wire kit but now I will need the wires that should have came with the controller. What wires do I still need?

Unfortunately, if you do not have a trailer connector on your 2006 Tundra, when you install the P3, part # 90195 you will have to hardwire it. The wiring harness that should have come with the P3 is part # 20127.

First I recommend the Upgraded Harness, part # C59496. This kit includes a circuit tester to help find the correct wires behind the tail lights on your Tundra. I have attached a drawing that shows how to run the wires for this wiring harness you can check out.

Next you need part # ETBC7. This plugs into the 4-way connector and with additional wiring gives you a 4-way and a 7-way connector at the back of your Tundra. I have attached a drawing of this as well that shows how the wiring is run for the # ETBC7 and a brake controller.

When working with electrical connectors I recommend using dielectric grease like part # 11755. This keeps dirt and moisture out of the electrical connections and helps prevent corrosion.
