Question:

Greetings, I currently have 7000# axles with 12.5inch x 2inch shoes. I would like to know if it is possible to convert to 12.5inch x 3.375inch shoes on the same 7000# axle? I realize the drums would have to change as well. I would like to get better braking action. Presently, I have the gain set to 10 on a 2014 Ram. What about converting to Disc brakes? It seems that the 3.375inch Electric brake would be easier to change out and less expensive. The RV is 16,500 # GVWR... Your thoughts?

None of the drums offered that are compatible with the wheel bearings used by a 7K axle would work with a 12-1/2 x 3.375 brake assembly, which is usually used on a 8 or 9K axle. I'm assuming your trailer is a tandem axle. Do both axles have brakes? If not, you could add brakes to the second axle which would dramatically increase your braking performance.

You would indeed experience more reliable braking action if you went with disc brakes. In order to make a recommendation, I'd need to know the reference numbers from the inner and outer wheel bearings of your existing hubs. You'd also need to add an electric over hydraulic brake actuator like the Hydrastar # CAR-HBA16-2. If your truck doesn't have a brake controller that's compatible with electric over hydraulic brakes, you'd need to add one that is such as the Tekonsha Prodigy P2, part # 90885.
