Parts Needed to Flat Tow a 1999 Chevy Tracker Behind an RV

Updated 02/08/2016 | Published 02/06/2016

Question:

I am interested in this base plate, but will it restrict the types of tow bars i might use? or are there adapters that allow use to use other manufactures tow bars with this base plate?

Base plates of one manufacturer can often be used with a tow bar from another manufacturer but you need adapters to do it. I recommend getting both the base plates and tow bar from the same manufacturer to avoid the adapters altogether. I recommend the Demco base plates # DM9518079 for you with a Demco tow bar like the Commander II # DM9511012.

In addition to the base plates and compatible tow bar you will also need safety cables, lighting, and supplemental braking when flat towing the 1999 Chevy Tracker behind an RV.

All of the Demco tow bars will come with safety cables. Roadmaster tow bars, with few exceptions, do NOT come with safety cables. If you choose a tow bar that does not come with safety cables I recommend # RM-643.

For lighting, you could use a simple magnetic kit such as # RM-2120. Or for a more permanent solution I recommend diode kit # RM-15247.

And finally, most states now require supplemental braking on the vehicle being flat towed. One of the preferred systems for our installers and what I recommend is the SMI Stay-IN-Play DUO proportional system, # SM99251. It will apply the vehicle brakes in proportion to how much the tow vehicle is braking. This is the safest way to stop and it reduces wear and tear on both vehicles.

Be sure to consult your vehicle owners manual for specific information on flat towing the vehicle. I have also included some helpful links to our series of help articles on flat towing for you.
