I have a couple of solutions for you to carry skis and boards on the 2012 Ford Explorer. First, you mentioned that the vehicle just has the side rails and not crossbars so you will need to add crossbars to the vehicle. The most cost effective solution for a 2012 Ford Explorer is an Inno roof rack using bars # INB137 and feet # INFR. Then you can use the Rhino-Rack carrier # RR576 or a similar carrier for your skis. I've linked the page with all your options.
