Question:
Do I need to have a sliding hitch installed for my new 5th wheel rig? I have a 6 and 1/2 foot bed on my 2008- 2500hd Silverado.

We highly recommend using a sliding hitch for the short bed trucks so that your trailer will not make contact with the back of your truck while towing. These hitches allow you to make tight turns on campgrounds or parking lots without damaging your vehicle. It's important to note that it is not recommended to tow with it in the extended/turning position but only in the towing position.
For your 2008 Chevrolet Silverado 2500, we offer custom fit brackets for your specific truck that I would recommend you use. We offer a variety of mounting options for you with above the bed rails or below the bed rails. I really like that the under bed option because it allows for full use of your bed when you aren't towing. I recommend the Demco Hijacker Autoslide # DM8550022 paired with the custom under bed brackets for your vehicle # DM8551004, because this slider hitch is unlike any other one we carry. You won't ever have to get out of your bed to adjust it from turning to towing, it automatically does all the work for you.
When towing a trailer you have to keep in mind you will need wiring, but I have a solution for that also. The Bargman # 50-97-410 is the wiring harness confirmed to fit your 2008 Chevy Silverado 2500.
For your convenience, I linked the page with all the 5th wheel systems that could work for you depending on your trailer's needs.
