Updated 10/19/2015 | Published 10/17/2015

Question:

Want to carry 200 lb snowblower crosstown to moms house on steep hill. Have 2003 Forester with manual tranny. Plan is install hitch + use aluminum maxxtow cargo carrier with ramp for wheelchair With 2500 lb tow capacity = 250lb tongue weight, right? Will rig ruin front wheel traction climbing that darn hill in snow? Thanks

I have a solution for you, but the MaxxTow cargo carriers you referenced will not work with the Class II trailer hitches for your Forester. Since only Class II trailer hitches are available for your vehicle, you will want to use a cargo carrier that is designed to fit a 1-1/4 inch trailer hitch receiver. We do not have any cargo carriers with ramps designed to fit 1-1/4 inch trailer hitches.

I recommend the 20x48 Curt Cargo Carrier for 1-1/4 Inch and 2 Inch Hitches # C18110. This cargo carrier does not have a ramp built in, but it does have a low sidewall that will work well with whatever ramps you decide to use to load your snow blower. The angled shank helps maintain ground clearance and the steel mesh floor will allow road debris and snow to fall through rather than build up on the floor of the carrier. I have attached a review video of this cargo carrier for you.

The trailer hitch I recommend for your 2003 Subaru Forester is the Draw-Tite Class II Frame Receiver Hitch # 36311. The Class II trailer hitch has a 1-1/4 inch receiver and exceeds your vehicle's gross towing and tongue weight capacity.

If your Forester has a towing capacity of 2,500 pounds, you are correct that your vehicle likely has a maximum 250 pound tongue weight capacity. I recommend checking your owner's manual to be sure of your vehicle's tongue weight capacity.

With a cargo carrier and a 200 pound snow blower on the back of your Forester, it will certainly weigh down the back of your vehicle. This could potentially cause some up-hill traction problems like you mentioned.
