Trailer Brake Controller Installation in 2007 Chevrolet Suburban 1500 2WD with 7-Way Trailer Socket

Question:

My 07 suburban comes with a towing package and my owners manual says that the car is equipped with electric trailer brakes but they are not connected. If I connect the wires do I have to purchase a separate trailer brake controller or does the car control the trailer brakes by itself once I connect the two wires to the fuse box?

Exactly what the term "tow package" means varies a lot between car makers, vehicle models and model years. Sometimes the term refers to a trailer hitch, heavy-duty suspension and fluid coolers, wiring harnesses, brake controller or all of the above. The best way to confirm exactly what equipment went into your Suburban at the factory is to ask your local dealership to look up the truck's VIN.

We do not show a 2007 Suburban having a built-in OEM brake controller. However, we do show that the vehicle should have the necessary wiring in place to allow you to install an aftermarket trailer brake controller like the excellent Prodigy P2 # 90885.

Since your Suburban already has a factory 7-way trailer socket all you will need to purchase is the brake controller itself. The linked article describes the entire installation process, which consists of joining 4 pairs of wires and making two wiring connections under the hood.

You will connect the GM wires to the Prodigy wires as follows:

GM Wire Brake Controller Wire
Red/Black Black
White White
Light Blue/White Red
Dark Blue Blue

The orange wire is not used.
