Does Metal Mounting Surface have to be a Certain Thickness to Use 2-1/2 Inch Round Light Grommet

Question:
How thick can the material that the light is being mounted in be? e.i. I have side rails that are made out of C channel that is approximately 1?4inch thick

Metal that is 1/4 inch thick will work well for the round grommet # A55GB. There isn't a specific metal thickness requirement for the grommet since the light pushing against it when installed is what holds the whole assembly in place.
