It sounds to me like you may actually have a ground problem. Often if a trailer has a weak or marginal ground connection it will be able to pass enough current for the lower current draw lights, such as the turn signals, but not enough for the side marker and taillights which are always on. To begin the troubleshooting, I would start with the easiest step first and check the connectors on both your 2012 Kia Sorento LX and the trailer. Make sure that they are clean and free of dirt and corrosion inside and out.

Next, check the main grounds, on the vehicle and trailer, to make sure that they are attached to a clean, corrosion free, bare metal surface. The light grounds on the trailer should also be attached to clean and corrosion free bare metal surfaces. Running jumper wires from the light grounds to the main trailer connector ground can help.

If the lights still aren't working, using a circuit tester like part # PTW2993, test each pin at the back of the Sorento as each function is activated. If everything is functioning as it should the issue is on the trailer. If not, the issue is on the vehicle, and we can move onto testing the converter.

On the input side of the converter, test each wire as its function is activated. If you have signal going into the box but not coming out then there is an issue with the converter and it will need to be replaced with either Curt T-Connector Vehicle Wiring Harness, # C56328, or T-One Vehicle Wiring Harness, # 118506.
