Swinging Bike Carrier to Clear 18 Inch Spare Tire on a 2011 Jeep Wrangler Unlimited
Updated 08/03/2015 | Published 08/02/2015 >
Question:
Hi, I have the Jeep Wrangler but with an 18inch tire for the unlimited edition. I purchased your Thule tilt but my tire is not clearing and I cant open my trunk or tail gate. I am going to return and get your swing one but... 1. What is the height of that receiver the part where the rack swings out of? I dont think my tire will clear it. 2. Are you also using an extender for the hitch?

The Thule Apex swinging bike carrier # TH9027XT would fit if your 2011 Jeep Wrangler Unlimited had the stock small spare tire at the back, just like in the video I have linked. But since you have the larger 18 inch tire it will not fit. Even with the smaller tire it just barely works.
If anything is going to work it will be the SportRack swinging carrier, # SR2415. It measures 9-1/2 inches from the center of the hitch pin hole to the back of the upright mast. And from the top of the shank to the top of the support gusset behind the upright mast it is 4-7/8 inches. I have linked a video review for you.
I do not recommend using an extender because doing so will reduce the tongue weight capacity of the trailer hitch by 50 percent.
