Prodigy P2 Brake Controller Seems to be Getting Weaker

Question:

Ive had mt P2 in my 2009 GMC Yukon Denali for several years now. Its always worked quite well until the last 2 times I towed with it. Im pulling a 23foot enclosed v-nose race car trailer, 6600# on a Cat scale. Reese Dual Cam. I used to tow with the braking set at 6.0 and boost at 6.1. These last two times Ive had to turn the braking up to 8.0 and 6.3 to get similar level of braking at speed. What has me questioning the controller is that when set at 6.0 and 6.1 if I use the manual lever I can almost lock up the trailer brakes, so I know Im getting proper braking to the 4 wheels. Trailer brakes were adjusted over the racing off season, and I towed twice after that where the old lower setting worked just fine. My next test might be to plug my P2 into a friends 2009 Tahoe in place of his P2 and see what happens, but that gets to be a challenge logistically. Any suggestions?

It is possible that the P2 is getting dirty on the inside. To clean the contacts you can fully apply the manual override and let it snap back into place several times. You might also inspect the connection on the red wire to make sure it is secure. If the controller is tilted or turned to one side that can also affect its performance. It could have been bumped on accident and a slight change can have a larger affect.
