The 4-pole trailer connector provides power for the trailer lighting circuits only, right turn, left turn, brake lamp and running lamp. The 7-way provides those, plus voltage for electric brakes, reverse lamps a 12-volt accessory power feed to the trailer.
In a nutshell, if the trailer you're wanting to tow does NOT have electric brakes, it'll likely have a 4-pole. Larger trailers would usually have electric brakes, and would use a 7-way trailer connector.
If your MKT has the tow package, you could install # HM40975 which would plug into an existing connector located behind the rear bumper. This connector would provide both the 7-way and a 4 pole. If the trailer has electric brakes and you would want them to actuate, you would need to install a brake controller like the Tekonsha Prodigy P2, part # 90885. A brake controller wiring adapter like part # 3035-P would allow the controller to plug into the connector under the dash.
If you do not have the tow package, to install a 4-pole you'd need the # C56095. To install a 7-way and brake controller, you'd first need to install the # C56095, then use the Brake Controller Install Kit, part # ETBC7. I'll link you to the installation instructions for all the products I've mentioned, as well as to some helpful FAQ articles.
