There is a way to carry bikes on your 2009 Volkswagen Beetle Convertible but no trunk mount carriers will fit. What you can do is use a trailer hitch and hitch mounted bike carrier. If this sounds like a feasible option then I recommend Draw-Tite trailer hitch # 24679.
This is a Class I trailer hitch so it will work well carrying one bike. As a Class I hitch you will need to look at Class I compatible bike carriers. For an inexpensive carrier that is compatible I recommend the Curt # C18085. This is a light weight carrier (just 20 pounds) that holds the bikes at the wheels. It will hold bikes with wheelbases from 22 to 50 inches. I have linked a video review of this carrier for you.
