Replacement Axle with Brake Flanges for Rockwood Pop-Up Camper 1940 LTD with 12-Inch Wheels

Question:

I have a 2014 Rockwood 1940ltd pop-up camper that I bought out of state with no brakes and is not set up for brakes as well. Do you know what size axle it would be as NY state requires trailer to have brakes on them. The only markings on the axle is a sold to dealer I.D. but no other info. Do you sell an axle with brakes that would fit the trailer. It has 12 inch rims on it and the GMW is 2147 LBS according the the sticker.

We do indeed offer complete axle kits that include the axle beam and spindles, electric brake assemblies, hub/drums along with bearings, races, seals, etc but we just do not happen to have a complete 2200-lb kit that will fit your 12-inch rims so we can help you select individual parts.

You have the option of having brake flanges welded to your axles (by a certified welder) that would allow you to install drum brake assemblies and new hubs/drums. The linked article describes the items needed for this process. This may be more cost-effective for you in both parts and labor than a complete axle replacement. Since your trailer is new this may make this option better in your case.

Electric trailer brakes require a brake controller like the Tekonsha Prodigy P2 # 90885 to take the tow vehicle braking signal and generate one for the trailer's electric brakes. The linked articles explain brake controllers and their installation and depending on your vehicle and how it is equipped there may be a simple plug-in solution that avoids the need for hard wiring.

You may also need to re-wire your trailer connector to one of the types that can support an electric brake circuit. The linked article on trailer wiring shows all the connector types in common use, and the type most often seen on trailers with electric brakes is the 7-way blade style such as # HM20048. You'll need a matching connector on the vehicle like # 30717.
