Question:
I am a little confused as to why I need to spend an extra $100 plus a more expensive tow bar for a Toyota 4x4 without leaf springs in front. Our 87 has independant suspension no leaf springs but has the standard tow loops and hook, which is where I believe the base plate kit bolts into. I dont care about looks or convenience....can I use the cheaper kit? Thanks!

I checked with my contact at Roadmaster, and the # 1123-1 base plate kit is only a fit for the 1987 Toyota pickup models with the leaf springs because these models have a narrower frame than the models without the leaf springs.
If your 1987 Toyota Pickup does not have leaf springs, you will definitely need to use the # 1146-1 kit.
