I see that the Thule website recommends using the 480 / 480R with the appropriate fitkit and bars. My CX5 does not have roof rails already installed but I do see the gutter like strip present. I am looking for the cleanest look that still works well. Could I not use Thule 460/R on my CX5?

The Thule roof racks that will fit your 2015 Mazda CX-5 with a naked roof will all have a clamp-on system that holds the feet to the roof with a metal clip that attaches to the top of the door jamb. Side rails are not needed for this style. But I take it that you do not want that style either.
For a roof rack that will fit into the fixed points that are in the rain gutter channels you can use a Rhino-Rack roof rack using bars # RRVA118B-2, leg kit # RRRLKVA, and fit kit # DK289.
