How to Pick Out a Proper Weight Rating Tire and Wheel for a Boat Trailer

Published 03/06/2015

Question:

I have a 3100 lb boat on a dually trailer and all four tires need replacing. What load rating would I need on those tires? They are 14 inch rims...thanks

Expert Reply:

The weight capacity of each Load Rating changes based on the tire size so a better option for you would be to go by the weight capacity of the tire.

First you need to determine what size tire or tire/wheel you would need, determine the weight of your trailer and your boat. Divide that figure by the amount of tires your trailer has and then get tires that have at least that amount of capacity. You should note that trailer tires should always be inflated to their max psi in order to get their full capacity.

To pick out the correct wheel and tire you will need the tire size that is listed on the sidewall of the tire and bolt pattern of the wheels. I attached a picture of what the tire size will look like on your sidewall and an FAQ on determining bolt patterns for you to check out as well.
