Troubleshooting Brake Controller Installation On 1991 Ford F-150

Updated 03/03/2015 | Published 03/01/2015

Question:

I have a 1991 Ford F-150 that I am putting a Tekonsha Voyager XL brake controller in. I followed the directions and now have 12v on the pin for the electric brakes all the time. I am using a 6 pin round set-up that is connected to a 4 flat that is the T-plug that goes in the wiring harness of the pickup. I spliced the stoplight red wire from the brake controller into the light green wire in the crescent shaped plug 2nd from the end on the 7 wire side just like the directions. Your online video just uses the brake pedal switch, which the Tekonsha directions specifically say not to do. So now what do I do? Thanks!

You will want to start from the beginning to make sure the wires are all connected properly on your 1991 Ford F-150. It sounds like you have somehow connected a 12V constant power wire to your connector.

I have attached a drawing that shows how the pins should be wired on a 6-way trailer connector. The drawing shows both the trailer and the vehicle side of a 6-way round plug.

The red wire that is coming from the brake controller should be connected to the cold side of the brake light switch located at the top of the brake pedal. The cold side should only show current when the brake pedal is pressed. I have attached a drawing that shows how the wiring should be run for a brake controller you can check out. I have also attached helpful articles that explain installing a brake controller and troubleshooting the installation.
