Is it Safe to Tow a Tear Trailer with a 2013 Volkswagen Beetle Diesel Turbo Convertible

Question:

The owners manual of the 2013 VW Beetle Diesel Turbo Convertible states that it is not recommended. I would like to pull a tear trailer that weighs 1,200lbs and has a tongue weight of 100 lbs. Do you feel confident that this would be no problem? What tests have you done with towing a trailer using the VW Beetle? Thanks for your help!

If the owners manual for your 2013 Volkswagen Beetle says that it is not recommended to tow a trailer but does not specifically say you can't then I would check with a Volkswagen dealer or, even better, Volkswagen corporate to clarify if it can be done or not.

While we haven't tested the Beetle in towing conditions I would not think such a light trailer would be a problem. But again, Volkswagen is going to have the final word.

If they give you the green light then you will need trailer hitch # C11354 since you have a diesel and convertible model and plan to tow. The recommended ball mount is # C45521. It is rated for 1,500 pounds gross trailer weight and 150 pounds tongue weight.

For a 1-7/8 inch ball use # 19256 and for a 2 inch ball use # 19258. And for a pin and clip use # F-4. Finally, for trailer wiring use # C56380.
