Ellen: Hey, everyone. I'm Ellen here at etrailer.com, and we're going to be taking a look at the replacement end cap for your HD crossbars from Yakima. So if something happened to that original cap, it got cracked or broken off, this is going to be that direct replacement from Yakima to get you back to your original looking bars. So it's going to come in a couple of pieces because of the way it has to install on the actual load bar itself, so we can take a closer look at how that's going to go together. So we'll have a piece on either side. It's also going to come with a little bar that goes in between, so that's kind of your load tie-down point.
A lot of times we'll put straps or ropes to the end of those bars, acts as an extra loading point. You'll also get a little button cap screw and a bolt.So first thing we're going to do is take the screw and put it into this little slot. You can see how there's kind of a little space there. That's going to match up with our hex nut. And then you also want to place in that bar, because once you snap these guys together, it's going to be really hard to get either one of those things in place.
Then we can take the other side, match it up with the first. Everything should line up. There's a little ridge on this tab or this tab here, so you're going to have to kind of squeeze until they snap over. But you want to make sure that you have everything in place before you do this, because it's going to make it a lot easier. That way, you're you're not having to take it apart and do it again.There we go.
Okay, so everything is lined up now, and you can see this hole here where our nut is going to be captured. Before it was snapped over, those holes didn't really line up, so the way to know that you have it snapped all the way in is that the two holes line up so you can put in the screw. And that's going to keep everything secured together, so you don't have to worry about it coming apart. So you just tighten that down all the way until the screw runs out of threads, or until it's around your bar. So that's going to go through your bar and keep everything tight together, and keep the end cap secured to the bar itself.And that's pretty much all there is to it.

This seller was referred to me by Yakima. They offered the OEM part replacement for my Yakima HD Outpost at very reasonable pricing. I installed the part with minimal effort (I did need to tap on it with a hammer to get the screw hole to line up). Seems to be just as good as the original.

Have been struggling to get one of these for months. etrailer was the only place I could preorder one. My only knock here has less to do with etrailer and more to do with Yakima for not having parts available for the HD racks and for a USPS hiccup in shipping. I live on the east coast and USPS sent my package to the west coast before it started to head my direction.
Also, do yourself a favor. Buy some security bolts for this from McMaster-Carr and put some loctite on the bolt threads so you don't lose your end caps. Bolts are M6x1, 12mm threaded length, 15mm total.
Even though the Yakima part was backed ordered, my order arrived when, if not before, what etrailer said it would arrive. I didn’t even need to call and find out the status. Great online experience with etrailer. However I think Yakima needs to include some lock tight for the HD crossbar end cap screws. After I installed the missing end cap,I tightened the other end cap screws , again. I’ll be going to the hardware store for a tube of lock tight today.

I ordered this product in June, with an “end of August” estimated ship date. To be honest, due to parts shortages an supply chain issues, I really didn’t expect to ever get it. It is what it says it is the end cap to Yakima HD crossbars. In this case it came already assembled.
