Radial Tires vs. Bias Tires

Radial tire vs bias tire graphic

Radial ply tires are designed for trailers that are towed on the highway. The cords on a radial tire are positioned at a 90-degree angle to the direction of travel so that they lay across the width of the tire from wheel lip to wheel lip. This construction prevents the cords from rubbing against one another when the tire flexes, unlike the cords on a bias ply tire. As a result, radial tires have less rolling resistance and heat buildup, which leads to a longer tread life and improved steering at higher speeds.

Determining the Bolt Pattern

The first number in the bolt pattern is the number of bolt holes. The second number denotes the diameter, in inches, of the circle on which the bolt holes sit.

Bolt Pattern - Odd

To determine the bolt-circle diameter on wheels with an odd number of bolt holes, measure from the center of any bolt hole to the point halfway between the two bolt holes directly across from the first. (Example: "5 on 4-1/2" means 5 bolt holes with 4-1/2" measured to a point halfway between the opposite bolt holes.)

Bolt Pattern - Even

On wheels with an even number of bolt holes, measure from the center of one bolt hole to the center of the hole directly across from it. (Example: "8 on 6-1/2" means 8 bolt holes with 6-1/2" from the center of one hole to the center of another on the opposite side.)

Bolt Pattern - Side

Measuring the distance from the center of one bolt hole on the wheel to the center of a bolt hole right next to it can also help to determine the bolt pattern.

  • If D = 2-5/8", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 4-1/2"
  • If D = 2-3/4", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 4-3/4"
  • If D = 3", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 5"
  • If D = 3-1/4", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 5-1/2"

  • Replacement Tires For Utility Trailer That Uses ST205/75D14
I can certainly help you out with that. If you just need replacement ST205/75D14 tires for your utility trailer then I recommend the Loadstar ST205/75D14 Bias Trailer Tire - Load Range C # AM1ST86. These are rated at 1,760 lbs each, translating to 3,520 lbs per axle which exceeds your trailer's GVWR of 2,990 lbs per axle per your photo. If you want the replacement wheel and tire combo so that you don't have to go to the tire shop to get them installed, you can go with the Loadstar ST205/75D14...

  • 15 Inch Wheel Compatible With Baby Moon Hubcaps
The wheel used on the # AM32395 Karrier 205/75-15 wheel doesn't have the retention clips or nubs stamped into it that would hold a hubcap in place (see photo). I have some options for you though. A conventional steel wheel like what's provided with # AM32352 does have the nubs or clips that would allow you to install a baby moon hubcap like # AM90086. This wheel features the same tire used on the # AM32395 that you'd asked about. If you wanted to stick with a wheel like what's provided...

  • Can I Upgrade My Utility Trailer From 14" Wheels To 15" Wheels?
Hello Bailey, thanks for reaching out. It may be possible to go with the larger 15" tires. The main thing to consider is the clearance in the wheel well area. You want at least 3" between the tire and the fender, and at least 1" between the inside of the tire and the frame of the trailer. The ST205/75R15 tires are about 1" larger in diameter than the ST205/75R14. So it would bring the tire 1/2" closer to the fender. As long as this would still leave you with adequate clearance, you will...

  • Replacement Wheel and Tire for Dexstar ST205/75-15
Hey Lori, thanks for the info on your wheel and tire. Based on that we know your wheel and tire size but I am not totally sure about the wheel design/color. We have the part # AM32395 that is most likely what you are looking for as it's a ST205/75-15 mounted on a white wheel with a 5 lug bolt pattern. This is a really common Dexstar trailer wheel design but if it's not what you have email me back a picture and I'll see which you'd need.

  • Will 4 of the ST205/75R15 Load Range C Tires be Enough for a 7,000 Pound Trailer
On a tandem axle trailer using a total of 4 tires in size ST205/75R15 load range C would have the capacity for a 7,000 pound trailer. The total capacity of all 4 tires would be 7,280 pounds. Be sure to always inflate trailer tires to the maximum psi indicated on the tire. For # AM32395 that would be 50 psi. Trailer tires are built with a thicker sidewall to handle more vertical load. If under inflated the sidewall will generate excessive heat and cause the tire to fail.

  • Recommendation for a Tire and Wheel to Replace an L78-15 Trailer Tire with 5 on 4-1/2 Bolt Pattern
Your trailer tire, L78-15, is roughly equivalent to a 205/75-15 size tire which is 27.1 inches overall height and about 8 inches overall width. The Karrier ST205/75R15 Radial Trailer Tire with 15 inch White Wheel - 5 on 4-1/2 - Load Range C, item # AM32395, is 27.3 inches tall and 8.1 inches wide and is a load range C tire designed to handle loads up to 1820 pounds at 50 psi. The 205-75-15 tires only come in load range B and C. You will need to match the trailer tires load rating to the...

The rear of your 2017 Coleman Lantern Series 244BH has the standard 4 inch bumper. For this application, I recommend the Bumper Mounted Tire Carrier - U-Bolt Mount # TR-1. This will allow you to mount your spare tire to your back bumper. There are many different tire options for your trailer, but I was able to narrow it down a little based on a 15 inch wheel and Radial tire. • Can Wheels and Tires Be Upgraded From 13" to 15" on Harbor Freight Trailer
In order to swap out your 13" wheels and tires with 15" you will need to match up the bolt pattern and make sure there is enough clearance. A wheel and tire like the Karrier ST205/75R15 Radial Trailer Tire with 15" White Spoke Wheel # AM32395 uses a 5 on 4-1/2 bolt pattern. If you have a 4 on 4 bolt pattern you would have to find 15" wheels that fit or you would need new hubs, assuming there are some available that fit. • Can Passenger Car Wheels be Used on a Trailer
There aren't really any rules for using wheels designed for passenger vehicles on a trailer like there are for tires but by the time you have the old tires dismounted and the new tires mounted/balanced, it will end up being more cost effective to just replace both the wheel/tire together. For this, I recommend a ST205/75-15 as this is going to be the closest option we have to the P195/75-15 tires that you have now. In order to recommend an exact wheel/tire combo for you I would need to...

  • Is There a Benefit to Go From 14 inch Trailer Tire to 15 inch Size
You can pretty easily go from a 205/75-14 to a 15 inch tire size like 205/75-15 like with the # AM32395 without clearance issues. This will give you a slightly larger wheel and tire which will have a higher weight capacity. So you might gain a slight increase in ride height if that's something you'd like as well as additional weight capacity. In theory you might see a better ride quality since a larger tire rolls easier over bumps.

  • Wheel Size Compatible With Trailer Axle with Idler Hubs # e84YR
The Trailer Axle with Idler Hubs # e84YR is only able to use 8"-12" wheels due to its weight capacity. Since this axle is rated for 2,000lbs you will need to use wheels and tires near that same rating. If you were to use 15" wheels and tires like the Karrier ST205/75R15 Radial Trailer Tire with 15" White Spoke Wheel # AM32395 that has a weight rating of 1,820lbs per tire, the tire will not flex and the added stress will transfer to axle and risks damage to the hub/spindle. • What Should the Tire Pressure be for ST205/75-15 5th Wheel Trailer Tires
On trailer tires you will always need to have them inflated to the maximum psi as indicated on the tire sidewall. For ST205/75-15 tire # AM32395, it is rated for 1,820 pounds at 50 psi. Different sizes and load ranges of the same size will have different psi ratings so always check the tire sidewall and inflate to the max psi listed when the tire is cold (prior to your trip). Trailer tires are built with a thicker sidewall to handle more vertical load compared to passenger vehicle tires....

  • Proper Amount Of Torque When Mounting A Wheel To The Trailer
For a 15 inch wheel like the Karrier ST205/75R15 Radial Trailer Tire with 15" White Wheel - 5 on 4-1/2 - Load Range C # AM32395, 90-95 ft lbs of torque is probably about right for your trailer rims. • How To Choose the Correct Axle Hub Face Length When Building a Trailer
Generally speaking, the hub face measurements will be around 15" longer than the spring center measurement. That said, this can vary based on multiple different factors such as tire size, offset, etc. The most common options we offer are the Dexter 3,500 Lb Trailer Axle Beams part # 35545I-EZ-89 for a 89" hub face and 74" spring center or part # 7359765-I for a 95" hub face and 80" spring center. • What Is Needed To Change ST205/75R14 Tires To ST205/75R15 Tires On A Trailer?
You are correct that the ST205/75R15 tires like the # AM1ST92 are 27.1" tall which is exactly one inch taller than the ST205/75R14 tires you currently have on your trailer. Since the width of the tires is the exact same, as long as you currently have at least 4" from the top of the tire to the bottom of the fender you will not have any clearance issues. To change to the ST205/75R15 tires you will also need 15" wheels, so I recommend going with a wheel and tire combination like the Karrier...

There are actually two options; one is a bias tire and the other is a radial tire. Bias tires are really only best for shorter trips and agricultural use while radial tires are best for normal, everyday roadways. The reason for that is bias tires have cords which run diagonally while radial tires have cords...

You should never change the wheel offset on your trailer or use different offsets on tandem axle trailers. Your axles should match, as should your tires. Your wheels can differ in style, but they should not differ in offset. This basically means your rear axle will track differently than your front axle on your 1984 Frontier travel trailer. Offset means the wheels and tires will either stick out further from the frame (negative offset) or be closer to the frame (positive offset)....
