Bias Tires vs. Radial Tires

Bias vs. radial tire graphic

Bias ply tires are designed for off-road or agricultural applications. They are built with thick, durable nylon cords that are positioned at a 30- to 45-degree angle to the direction of travel. The layers alternate in a crisscross pattern, making the sidewalls stiffer so that the entire tire is able to flex easily. As a result, the tire provides a smooth ride and improved handling when trailering on uneven surfaces.

Determining the Bolt Pattern

The first number in the bolt pattern is the number of bolt holes. The second number denotes the diameter, in inches, of the circle on which the bolt holes sit.

Bolt Pattern - Odd

To determine the bolt-circle diameter on wheels with an odd number of bolt holes, measure from the center of any bolt hole to the point halfway between the two bolt holes directly across from the first. (Example: "5 on 4-1/2" means 5 bolt holes with 4-1/2" measured to a point halfway between the opposite bolt holes.)

Bolt Pattern - Even

On wheels with an even number of bolt holes, measure from the center of one bolt hole to the center of the hole directly across from it. (Example: "8 on 6-1/2" means 8 bolt holes with 6-1/2" from the center of one hole to the center of another on the opposite side.)

Bolt Pattern - Side

Measuring the distance from the center of one bolt hole on the wheel to the center of a bolt hole right next to it can also help to determine the bolt pattern.

  • If D = 2-5/8", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 4-1/2"
  • If D = 2-3/4", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 4-3/4"
  • If D = 3", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 5"
  • If D = 3-1/4", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 5-1/2"

Ordering the tires for my landscape trailer was straightforward using your website. The tire’s arrived in excellent condition and the packaging was also excellent. Your instructional videos helped me to select the correct rim type for my trailer. I had no idea that there were specific ways to confirm the rim/lug spacing until I looked at the video. Thanks for making this a pleasant experience.

by:

Excellent experience. After being in a jam over the weekend with a blow out, I needed the correct tire and wheel. These were for a Big Tex utility trailer with 5 on 5 which is impossible to find at retailers in my town. I ordered a pair on Monday and had them by Wednesday noon. They were shipped in their own box. I would highly recommend buying from this company and will use them for future items I need. Excellent customer experience.

Great, no problems at all.

by:

As always, etrailer got my rims and tires out to me in a timely. The products fit perfectly.

by:

Received this tire and rim last week. Pulled the ones of my trailer only to find out that they had sent me the wrong size rim. I ended up swapping the new tires off and onto my old rims. I could not wait another week for a new order. Company was very prompt to send a replacement, so prompt they refused to cancel the replacement after when i told them this within hours. Anyways, tires are good. Cant twll you about the rims. I will say it is a pain in the butt now to spend the 40 minutes to get to the nearest UPS return to send these back.

by:

The product was exactly what I ordered. It is of good quality and the delivery time is very quick.

Good looking wheels and tires delivered to Florida in a week. Ready to bolt them on my trailer this evening.

by:

Seems to be a good tire and wheel combo.

by:

I just received the product, but its look like it will work fine as a spare tire for my utility trailer.

by:

Excellent service and tire/wheel is exactly what I ordered. Just installed it and was somewhat relieved when lug bolt pattern matched.

by:

My order came faster than I ever expected. 2 days actually! And I couldn’t have bought new tires, valve stems, mounting fees ect. for less. Plus, I got brand new wheels.

by:

Excellent service and quality! Fit perfectly on my car trailer. Will use for a spare. Also came a day earlier then projected ??

by:

Time will tell on the product. I really enjoy doing business with E-Trailer.

by:

The tire is going to be used as a spare. It’s an average tire. The bolt I used on my auto steps on the rv it worked out great. FAST SHIPPING

by:

Outstanding service. Ordered processed same day, got email confirmation. Arrived in 2 days.

by:

The tires arrived ahead of scheduled delivery. They were exactly what was advertised online.

by:

Wheel fits perfectly. Bought it for a spare for the trailer. It's a 15 inch 5 lug 5 in unit. The shipping was super fast. Ordered on a Wednesday late at night and it was delivered in less than 48 hrs.

by:

Bought a used UTV that came with a single axle trailer & the trailer had no spare. Got a quote from a local tire store that the spare would cost about $250. Found the same wheel & tire on eTrailer for half the price with free shipping. I'm a happy customer!

by:

The tire and wheel were flawless and were exactly as advertised. It is a pleasure doing business with these folks!

by:

The product purchased was Loadstar ST205/75D15 Bias Trailer Tire with 15" White Wheel - 5 on 5 - Load Range C. The delivery was free. The choice of products on e-trailer.com was greater that of local brick and mortars stores and I did not have to spend a lot of time driving around looking for a replacement. The tire/wheel was well packaged. Upon opening, the product met all expectation; it seems to be a quality product. The price was acceptable. When the occasion arises, I will shop etrailer.com again.

by:

I got 4 wheels to replace my original trailer wheels which had lasted for 16 years. These new wheels arrived very quickly and fit properly, the web site had all the info I needed to make sure I was able to order the correct size (bolt spacing).

I haven't driven the trailer yet, and obviously not enough time has passed to say how well these tires will wear and how long they will last.

I need to update this review every 5 years or so.. (I put very few miles on my trailer)

by:

everything was perfect

by:

Good service from etrailer. Customer service was great. I ordered the wrong size wheel in the beginning. Lori was very polite and helpful in getting the right size ordered for me. Good company to do business with.

by:

Quick delievery, Good quality and fits well

by:

Great job as always! I've shopped with etrailer for many years and they always have quality products, fast shipping, excellent customer service and very competitive prices. These wheels and tires are for my utility trailer. I've just pulled it over 300 miles one way with a load and the wheels and tires are exactly what I needed.

  • Is the Pin Stripe Removable On Loadstar ST205/75D15 Bias Trailer Tire with 15 White Wheel AM3S638
The Loadstar ST205/75D15 Bias Trailer Tire with 15" White Wheel - 5 on 5 - Load Range C part # AM3S638 does have a blue and red pin stripe around the rim that is not removable. All the wheel and tire combos we carry in this size with white wheels have the pin stripe. Even the wheels that we carry with this bolt pattern and size in white have the pin stripe.

  • Can Trailer Tires Exceed 65 Miles Per Hour
I can't recommend you exceed the speed rating of a trailer tire. Doing so will cause the tire to heat up considerably and fail much easier. My sister used to exceed the 65 MPH speed rating of her horse trailer tires and wondered why she kept having blowouts. She finally slowed down and her tires stopped failing. I attached a help article on trailer tires for you to check out as well.

Yes, we can help you select a correct spare tire/wheel for your 5 x 8 enclosed trailer. You might take a look at the linked articles on tires and wheels as these will help you identify exactly what you have and what you need as a replacement. We offer tire and wheels by themselves, and also already mounted together. Tire size will be indicated on the sidewall and might be for example 205/65-10. You also need to match your wheel bolt pattern. In addition to the helpful articles I have...

  • Will a 205/75-15 Trailer Tire Fit the Same Wheel as a 225/75-15 Tire
Every trailer tire can fit a range of different wheel widths. If the wheels you have are 6 to 6-1/2 inches wide (on the inside where the tire sits, not overall width) then yes, you can put a 205/75 on in place of a 225/75. The 6 and 6-1/2 widths are the 2 sizes that overlap between those 2 tires sizes.

  • Does Trailer Tire Weight Carrying Capacity Decrease with Less Air in the Tires
Tire capacity will vary by size but for a 205/75-15 Load Range D it will be a max of 2,150 pounds at 65 psi. Trailer tires should be ran at the max psi to avoid overheating the tire. If you run it at 50 psi the capacity per tire decreases to about 1,600 pounds per tire but it is hard to say for sure due to environmental factors, tire condition, and so on.

  • Trailer Rim Availability that Will fit a 5 on 5 inch Bolt Pattern
A trailer wheel with a 5 on 5 inch bolt pattern like the # AM3S638 would bolt up to a hub with a 5 on 5 inch bolt pattern. However, I can't recommend you use a trailer rim and tire on a vehicle unless the hub happens to be on a truck bed that is converted to a trailer.

  • Can 185/80R13 Tire Be Replaced With 165/80D13 Tires On Small Camper
If the wheels on your camper can work with the smaller tire you should have no problem. The diameter of the 185/80R13 tire has an overall diameter of about 24.65 inches. The 165/80D13 tire will have an overall diameter of about 23.40 inches, so it will be a little over an inch shorter than the tires you have on your camper now. You are talking about replacing radial tires with a bias-ply tire. Radial tires flex more than bias-ply and will typically run cooler than a bias-ply. You always...

  • Why Does Trailer Tire Have Lower Weight Capacity When Used in Dually Setup
This is a really good question that has come up before. I spoke with our local tire guru here at etrailer about this a while back and he offered the following explanation for the difference in tire capacity when a tire is used as a dually or single wheel setup: The load on each tire in a dual tire system is never the same. Tires can be worn differently, if wear is different the overall diameter will be different and the larger tire will carry more load. Also the inner tire can be more...

The difference between the two trailer tire sizes is that the letter D in the first size you listed ST205/75D15 stands for bias ply and the letter R in the tire size that they put on your vehicle stands for radial. Radial tires are preferred over bias ply, but if the rest of your tires are bias ply and now you have a single radial you would want to strongly consider having all tires match. The main difference between a radial ply and a bias ply tire is how the tire is constructed. The...

We do have options for replacing your tire and wheel. We don't sell used tires and wheels, but the modern equivalent of the 7.00-15 tires are here. They are in fact 225/75D15. A good combination wheel and tire is the Loadstar Bias White Wheel, part # AM3S870. This wheel has the same 6 on 5-1/2" bolt pattern and is a 15" rim. The load range is D, and the ply rating is 8 (so slightly higher than your original tire). I've linked to a video review of this tire for you to look at.

In the 2 measurements you've provided, the 15 is the designation for the wheel size that those 2 particular tires will fit on; in tire measurements, usually the last number corresponds with the diameter of the wheel a particular tire will fit on. So, in both of these cases, you would need a 15" wheel. For the 7.00-15 tire, those would fit on 5", 5-1/2" and 6" wide wheels where a 205/75/15 tire will fit on 5" to 6-1/2" wide wheels. The one thing I noticed in those measurements is that you're...

I recommend sticking with a radial tire like the Karrier ST205/75R15 Radial Trailer Tire - Load Range D # AM10245 as they are going to give you better on-road traction due to the design of the sideway, and will stay cooler on the highway leading to longer tire life.
