Pro Tip: Before you invest in a weight distribution hitch, make sure your cargo is evenly loaded in your trailer to keep the weight balanced. If you still have a hard time even after balancing your tongue weight, a weight distribution hitch should help.

Positive Caster Makes for a Smoother Towing and Installation Experience

Blue Ox TrackPro Positive Caster

When you turn a corner in a car and let go of the steering wheel, the wheel automatically corrects itself and returns to center. The same technology used to keep your vehicle centered on the road is what the TrackPro uses to prevent trailer sway before it even starts, no matter if it's caused by high winds or sharp turns. Pointing toward the rear of your trailer, there's a positive caster angle built into the hitch. It works in tandem with the tapered spring bars to create a self-centering force that keeps your trailer consistently centered behind your tow vehicle.

This positive caster creates another benefit - an easier installation. Since the required pitch is alredy pre-set, there's no need to fine-tune it using hard-to-access washers or a difficult-to-use thumbscrew. The only adjustment that may be needed is the placement of the head on the shank. Move the head up or down along the weight distribution shank to achieve the proper height.

Steel-on-Steel Friction Corrects Sway

Blue Ox TrackPro Steel-on-Steel Friction

If you need an option built with American-made steel that will hold your trailer in line while providing sway control, the Blue Ox TrackPro might be just what you're after. In addition to the pre-set pitch described earlier, the TrackPro creates a rigid system that holds your trailer in line behind your vehicle, helping keep your trailer from getting off track. And it uses friction to force your trailer back in line if a strong crosswind or passing truck is a bit too much for the rigid hold to handle on its own.

A close-up image shows where the spring bar grinds on the steel bracket

Because the steel-on-steel friction of the bars and L-brackets is noisy, don't be alarmed if you hear some banging, creaking, and grinding. It's just the system working to correct sway.

Fun Fact: Steel-on-steel friction is what locomotives use to keep multi-ton railcars from swaying.

Why Use a Weight Distribution Hitch?

Diagram showing weight distribution on a truck and towing a camper

  • Prevents uneven tire wear on your vehicle and trailer
  • Keeps the rear of your tow vehicle from sagging
  • Lets you tow to the max capacity of your trailer hitch
  • Stops your headlights from pointing up at the sky
  • Gives you control over steering your rig

Selecting the Right Weight Distribution System

  • Think "Goldilocks"
    • If you go for overbuilt, you'll have a rigid ride
    • If it's not strong enough, it's virtually useless
  • Let your tongue weight be your guide

Your tongue weight is the first thing you need to know when figuring out which weight distribution system you need. Most people think that if they get the highest-rated system possible, it'll be smooth sailing. But actually, this will create a rigid ride and a bouncing trailer. On the other hand, if the system isn't strong enough, it won't be able to distribute the weight properly, making it virtually useless.

Once you know your trailer's tongue weight, add it to the weight of the cargo behind the rear axle of your tow vehicle. Then just choose a weight distribution system rated for that combined tongue weight.

  • Weight of Replacement Blue Ox Weight TrackPro Weight Distribution BLU35FR
Hello Keith, The weight of the Replacement Blue Ox TrackPro Weight Distribution Head # BLU68FR is 25.6 lbs while the Blue Ox TrackPro Weight Distribution # BLU35FR weighs 92.9 lbs. As for the differences between sway control, 2-point means there is sway control at two points in the system, just at the arms where they attach to the trailer frame. A system with four points of sway control has it at the arms as well as the head unit where the arms connect. A 4-point sway control system is...

  • Will A 10,000 lb Weight Distribution Hitch Work On A 4,000 lb Camper?
Hello Jeffrey. No, it would not. Weight distribution hitches will all have a specific range of tongue weights they will work with. For example, the Blue Ox TrackPro Weight Distribution w/ Sway Control # BLU35FR will work on trailers with a tongue weight between 1,000 and 1,300 lbs. If you were to put this on a 4,000 lb trailer, there would not be enough tongue weight to put adequate tension on the spring bars. So, technically you could install it, but it wouldn't do anything. While...

  • Setting Curt TruTrack Weight Distribution System Up On Trailer with Underslung Coupler
I think the issue you're running into is being caused by the underslung coupler which the Curt TruTrack Weight Distribution System part # C17501 isn't really designed for. It's possible you can still get the system setup and working but it will never work as good as a system designed for this type of coupler like the Blue Ox TrackPro Weight Distribution part # BLU35FR which is what I recommend. It has the same sway control design and around the same price, the shank also has more adjustment...

  • Using The Curt TruTrack On A Trailer With An Underslung Coupler.
Yes, we do offer longer frame brackets for the Curt TruTrack WD hitch. We have the # C17515 which are made for 8" frames, and the # C17516 which are made for 10" frames. That said, the Curt TruTrack really is not made for underslung couplers. It's possible you can still get the system setup and working but it will never work as good as a system designed for this type of coupler. We do offer the Blue Ox Trackpro which is made specifically for underslung couplers # BLU35FR. This is their...

  • Recommended Weight Distribution System For A 2008 Ford F-150 FX4 Pulling A New Toy Hauler
We have quite a few options available for your 2008 Ford F-150 FX4 to pull your new toy hauler. The 1,126 pound tongue weight of said toy hauler will not be an issue at all and I have 3 options listed below. The first one will be a budget option, the second will be a mid range option, and the third one will be a top of the line option. First, the Curt MV Weight Distribution System # C17057 will have a weight range of 1,000 pounds at the minimum and 1,400 pounds at the max. This will work...

  • What Frame Dimensions Does Blue Ox TrackPro Weight Distribution System Fit
The frame brackets of the Blue Ox TrackPro Weight Distribution # BLU35FR that you referenced were designed to fit up to 6 inch tall frames. Since you have an 8 inch tall frame you could use the holes of the brackets as a template and drill holes through the frame and attach them like that instead.

  • Blue Ox Weight Distribution System for Kaufman Dump Trailer that Has Rating of up to 10k lb
Assuming your dump trailer would be near it's gross trailer weight of 10,000 lbs the higher rated Blue Ox TrackPro part # BLU35FR would be the better option as it has a tongue weight range of 1,000-1,300 lbs. But with dump trailers it can be challenging to use a weight distribution system since the way the system is setup is based completely on the tongue weight of the trailer and dump trailers have this figure vary quite a bit. You most likely will find that you'll have to have the bars...

  • Recommended Weight Distribution With Sway Control Hitch For a RV Transporter
I do have a recommendation so that you will not have to have separate hitches as the Blue Ox SwayPro Weight Distribution # BXW1503 hitch head is specific for underslung only couplers. I recommend getting the Blue Ox TrackPro Weight Distribution # BLU35FR for towing with your 2016 Ram 5500. While this hitch is also specific to underslung couplers you can change out the L-Bracket Plates # BLU42QR to use a standard coupler. This system is rated for trailers with a tongue weight of 1,000-1,300lbs...

  • Recommended Weight Distribution System With 6 Inches of Drop
The Reese Steadi-Flex # RP66560 offers good sway control and weight capacities, but is a little limited on the amount of drop. We do not currently have an option to give you more than 4 inches of drop. That being said, we do have a few other options available. The Blue Ox Weight Distribution Shank # BLU86FR will offer up to 7 inches of drop when used with one of their trunnion bar set ups. This would need to be purchased separately from one of said systems. These do have a little less...

  • Recommended Weight Distribution System For 2022 Arctic Fox 25R Travel Trailer
Hey Lisa! It looks like your Arctic Fox 25R Trailer has a standard coupler, so there's no need to go with a system like the Blue Ox # BLU35FR you were looking at that's designed for the 'underslung' setup. Also, with a trailer of this size you're looking at a loaded tongue weight of between around 1,070 and 1,605 pounds, making this system potentially a bit under-rated. The TrackPro isn't offered in a higher-rated system, so I recommend looking at the Equal-i-zer # EQ64FR, which works...
