Note: To determine whether you can use snow chains on your vehicle, or if they might affect your ABS/EPS functionality, consult your owner's manual.

These pewag ladder-patterned chains are great winter weather chains for your SUV, truck, or 4WD vehicle. Not only do the grooved square links dig into deep snow and ice better than rounded or standard square links, but the reversible design of these chains also allows them to wear under standard use much longer than other chains. And if you're partial to American-made products, you'll be happy to know that these are made in Colorado.

Confirming Your Fit

If you know your tire size, you may think you won't need to test fit your new chains. But there are a lot of variables that can affect whether chains will fit your specific tires, including your tire type, the amount of air pressure in the tire, the amount of tread wear, and the tire manufacturer.

We recommend that you order chains as early in the season as possible to give yourself plenty of time to test fit the chains and reorder if needed. This way, you won't be stuck out in the cold later with snow chains that don't fit.

You can test fit these chains in your garage or driveway, but you'll want to wait until there's snow on the ground to actually drive with them. Likewise, if you're out in the snow and come across bare pavement, you'll want to pull over and remove the chains. These chains can cause damage to the bare pavement, your garage floor, or your vehicle if they break from the wear of riding on a harsh surface.

Installing Snow Chains

Installing these chains is simple.

Lay chains on the ground to get all the tangles out

1. Lay out the chains on the ground to make sure there are no twists or kinks.

Drape chains over tire.

2. Drape the chain over your tires, making sure that the prongs attaching the cross chains to the side chains face away from your sidewalls. Drive forward about half a tire rotation.

Connect the chain behind the tire

3. On the back of the tire, pull the chain tight and hook the ends together. Repeat this on the front of the tire.

Twist cams

4. Insert the included tool into the cam and twist to tighten the sidewall chain. Twist as many cams as it takes to get a tight fit.

Attach optional tensioners

5. Drive forward 2-3 vehicle lengths and recheck the chain tension. Tighten any loose cams. If needed, rubber adjusters (sold separately) can help you get a tight fit. Make sure the hooks on the adjusters face away from your tire so your wheels don't get scratched.

Quick Tips:

  • Lengthen the life of snow chains by drying them after each use before you store them.
  • Check out our installation kit with safety lights and a kneeling pad (PO34FRK) to make things a little easier when you're installing chains out in the snow.

How to Choose Snow Chains for Your Vehicle

To choose the right snow chain, you must match your tire size. Those measurements can be found on the side of your tire.

Tire size on sidewall

185/60-15

  1. (185) - indicates tire width in millimeters
  2. (60) - gives you the aspect ratio (sidewall height as percentage of width)
  3. (15) - denotes the diameter of the wheel rim in inches

Video Transcript for In-Depth Review of the pewag Tire Chains w/ Cams

Today, we're gonna be taking a look at the pewag All Square 5.6 millimeter Snow Tire Chains. These are gonna be a ladder pattern style chain, so they're gonna be a little more rough of a ride than the diagonal or diamond pattern chains, but that's not a huge deal, these aren't gonna be the roughest ride of all of them though, there are some all square snow tire chains that are a little bit bigger, these are 5.6 millimeters linked thick, so these are relatively larger, but not as big as they can go, so they're gonna get you a decent amount of traction, and these are gonna be less traction than some of the V-bar style chains. These do have a little bit stronger steel material, it's manganese nickel alloy, some of them are low carbon steel, so these are definitely winning when it comes to how hard and how strong they are, so they should last a long time. And one thing I like about it is just the cam tensioners, they really do help get a really nice fit on the chain, so that is something to kinda think about, just because as treads start to kinda go down, sometimes the diameter of your tire changes ever so slightly, so with the cam tensioners, you can be confident that they're as tight as they can be, so they're not gonna fall off or anything and damage the vehicle. These won't damage your wheels, so notice how we have a very large amount of gap between the chain and our rims, so even if we we're in very, very thick, heavy snow where it's pushing in on the side walls, it's not gonna go and scratch our wheels, that's something I look at, just because these are nice and I wanna keep them nice, so you don't have to worry about that with these. If you wanna put these on just the back wheels of whatever vehicle you may have, you can do that, it does come in a pack of two, but if you do wanna put it on the front wheel as well, you're gonna have to grab two of these.

So they have a pretty big bag and it's not a canvas bag, so it is not gonna rip near as easily, so that's a good thing. There's plenty of room in the bag too to get all the chains in there, so you don't have to worry about just kinda having to stuff stuff in. A lot of times, when you get products, sometimes, they don't get packaged up as nice and neatly as they did before, but with these, they have plenty of room in this bag. But once it's all in there, it's about this size, it'll fit underneath your backseat or in your toolbox, whatever you have going on on your vehicle. But when it comes to these, I think they're gonna be a pretty good option for you.

And that's pretty much it for a look at the pewag All Square Snow Tire Chains with cam tensioners..

Appears to be of high quality. Ordered 2 sets and arrived in a timely manner.

by:

Didn't include a cam wrench, or a recommendation to order the wrench separately. What came is what I ordered but not what I needed to use the product. So: average.

by:

Great product. Use Pewag's sizing chart.

by:

We use these on our Frieghtliner M2's and these are the only chains that we haven't had break. I will only use pewag in the future.

by:

Used Christmas Eve in 10 inches of snow. F150 climbed two miles, up to a mountain neighborhood, for family gathering. Easy to fit. Didn't loosen.

by:

I've not used the chains as of yet, however, the quality of the chains is unbelievable...
If your on the fence about which brand to buy consider this to be a great choice if you are looking for quality and satisfaction.

Hi Carol,

The chain packaging was
op0ened and looked pre-used with holes in the sack as well.

There were no cable ends included to pull the chains over the tires so I am unsure these are correct for 235/55 R20 tires as listed. For now will use another vehicle, I may need to exchange thes, ideally that will not be a problem for you guys.

thank you!

Overpriced compared to competitors by 100% Have yet to check size

by:

Nice Chains---The chains we received were for a light truck. The tires we have are P215 70R15 and the chains do not fit. We need 2 more links to make them even come close to closing. We have the truck in the garage in ideal conditions--but if we were out on the road---this is impossible. Sent an e-mail to e-trailers and waiting for a response. Also, 2 of the side links have been put on backwards from the factory.

by:

the chains showed up and appear to be correct, thank you

by:

Great set of chains, fit as they should, and best of all, THEY ARE NOT FROM CHINA. The service from etrailer was great as usual.

  • Are Cam Tensioner Tire Chains Good for Plowing Snow with a 1995 Dodge Ram
First, in the case of tire chains like # PWE2216SC, a light truck is a consumer grade pick up. A medium duty would be like a 5500 series truck, generally found in commercial applications. Cam tensioners work well and provided that you have the chains tight on the tires they should not shift or loosen on you. There are many different chain options for any given tire size. To make the best recommendation I would need to know the size tires on your 1995 Dodge Ram. I have included a couple...
